too small for two, too warm for waste.
sometimes she comes without a word
and sits...

when their lives begin to number in weeks instead of days
then their ages become months

i'm still in the negative
i am cauled, enclosed within the cavity of belly.
with fetal eyes i watch from the inside—
the curve in, inhale,
the swell out, exhale,
and watch, watch as it goes out, so far out—
i do not count in days and hours;
i count in pounds and ounces.

one day...
