the skyline softens when it falls in on itself. cobalt and indigo fight in explosions of color, and supernovae burst as he paints constellations on my skin. slowly, unwraps the love resting in my sternum. layer by layer, like the nesting dolls i loved as a child. unsaid words melt in my fingers before they ever reach his ears; too soon, the bedsheets swallow us into milky night. the dip of his collarbone feels lonely as i trail velvet kisses...

the musings of a wallflower

FREE WRITING

needle-point frost is a shivering breath away / opaque condensation has lost its luster / like a burden scourging my skin / and deep down / i know my bones sway with the memory of being forgotten / there was no fall from heaven / no limbo to cling onto / the sunset-hazed clouds still ripple across the sky / ocean eyes still erode sea glass into gems / laughing brooks still soften in the sunlight / and belonging melted,...

i miss your mothballed promises

shards of fury splinter his jaw; bloodshot veins lay trapped underneath marble skin, and yet regret is softly cradled between jagged rocks. his ichor glows not golden, but opalescent: viridian jealousy, sapphirine doubt, carnelian pride carve facets into a prism almost at its breaking point. they call him a tempest, a whirlwind, and maybe he is. maybe there is no hand able to calm the storm, no paradise for those whose own shadows shun them. still, a split core rattles...

interlocking

FREE WRITING

afterwards, you found pieces of yourself
drifting in the air; but never back to you

fevered forehead almost singed bare hands,
but pulled away just in time, two silver strands caught between
clammy fingers, and wasn’t your hair black like hers?

eyelashes mourned the spiderweb shadows creeping underneath your eyes,
and clung to the mottled skin of your cheek instead, waiting
for those tender fingertips to brush them off

and you never believed in tears, not ever,
but they said...

cradle of stars

FREE WRITING

we slept under a cradle of stars,
moonlight eyes and silken hair and
not a care in the world

a quiet repose from our clockwork lives,
stillness baring her guttural heartbeat, thumping
underneath a shirt of grass
the yearning croaks of grasshoppers and
smells of calm.

we wanted to believe we were lost, shipwrecked
finally separated from the normal we had longed to cast away
always reaching, always climbing the endless ladder
listlessly watching
hectic days give way to hollow...

city angel

her lacquered wings smear oil paints across the sky
as falling feathers sing saccharine sonatas
to lull creaking skyscrapers to sleep

whether or not she plucks them, i do not know
perhaps to scatter somnolent symphonies whose
obsidian notes dust the ground
as they wait for the chosen one

her voice pierces through cotton-candy clouds
and melts at the kiss of night
they say her feathers fly across the horizon
and that is what gives sunsets their burning radiance

speak forth, then
proclaim your litany of lies
illustrate injustices all beginning with why
(while ignoring inequities, for all must comply)

why can’t you be like elizabeth, fair maiden that she is
who every day pins curled blonde locks to a fine french twist?
who smears talc across eyelids and raised cheekbones
swan-like complexion dainty in the sun
and still remembers the night when that drunkard boy desired some fun?
creamy silk trails delicate kisses when trembling fingers touch
so...

nighttime muses

FREE WRITING

the night welcomes the lost with open arms
a safe harbor for weary travelers
where time does not pass
but instead melts on the tip of your tongue
like the soft breeze whispering through the trees
wrapping you in its smooth, sultry embrace
a blanket enveloping your worries
and easing them, even if just for a little while

neon lights cast fluorescent halos
crowning angels who rise after dusk
cars speed through,
low whistles lingering for a moment
then melding...
