midnight snack

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2017

my heart is an open fridge door

it's 12:17 a. m. and the reminder to close it stopped beeping a while ago

the toasted light tumbles down the drawers and shelves and spills out onto the kitchen floorboards like spilt milk

no one bothered to clean it up

yellow, the kitchen is smaller but emptier

no floral curtains hang on the window, no herbs are grown on the sill

maybe they used to, i can't remember 

but now dust gathers in...
