anticipation

PROMPT: No Pause for Breath

An evergreen tree stands strong by a lake, refusing
to bow to a wind gone mad with smoke and
wishes and memories, but the glass water quivers
with regret and trepidation,
waiting,
waiting,
waiting to see if the creatures below and the birds above will
make the same mistakes as their fathers,
waiting,
waiting,
waiting to see if the boat it carries holds promise or
death, and all creation holds its breath for a glimpse of
what comes next, still ...

The Happy Man

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2018

A small gentle breeze is all that it takes
to topple the Happy Man.
He skips along gaily, dismissing his sorrows,
till his toe snags a crack and
he's gone.

The Happy Man lacks what the
Sad Man does not,
a foothold and strong foundation.
A sturdier zeal,
a hold on tomorrow,

and a Joy that needs no preparation.

A Parisian Engagement

PROMPT: Lexical Catharsis

The Eiffel Tower's lights glittered in the darkness. She stood by the railing, her brown hair blowing in the wind. She turned and smiled. Her eyes sparkled at me, at I knew that this was the right moment.

"Rachel," I said. My heart skipped a beat as I walked over to her. "I've known you since we were in kindergarten."

"A-Alex," she stuttered. "W-what are you doing?"

"You had to know this was coming, Rachel," I said as I knelt...

Something More Than Words

PROMPT: Collected Wisdom

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in all my years of writing, it’s that rules are meant to be broken. Writing is so much more than a simple string of words full of complex punctuation and impressive googled synonyms. It’s so much more than spitting a bunch of pleasing phrases on a blank sheet of paper. It’s about accomplishment, and discovering the subtle complexities of language for yourself. It’s not about taking everyone’s advice, it’s about learning and growing into...

What's Happening in Canada

PROMPT: Newsworthy

1. Welcoming Syrian Refugees: Last year, Canada took in over 25,000 refugees. They have lived in Canada for almost a year, and are adjusting to the very different and very cold weather. Communities have come together to welcome these refugees, and many churches across the country are currently sponsoring families as they settle in.

2. Former Dragon's Den star Kevin O'Leary has announced his decision to run for leadership of the Conservative Party. This has caused a lot of...

RESISTANCE FIGHTER (R.F.) 2

All of North America has fallen under the tyrannical rule of Marx, an aged man of around sixty. Since he has taken over, society has regressed to a more primitive state and weapons are limited to old fashioned swords and other such medieval arms. A Resistance has risen up, but Marx has slowly been hunting down and capturing its members. Tara, the leader of the Resistance,...

An Endless Dance

PROMPT: Why I Write

Writing is a dance. I write to see how language moves and changes. I write to express things with a depth mere words should not be able to convey. I write to spark emotion in people, to share something neither author nor reader completely understands. I write to lose the world, and to unearth new ones. I write because I have to, because without writing I will be forever searching, but never finding.

I write because writing is a dance,...

The Little Boat

FREE WRITING

For as long as anyone could remember there was a small cabin in the mountains. The cabin was a short walk away from a river that flowed idly through the woods, and by that river stood a little boat. The boat, like the cabin, belonged to a family that had grown their roots in those mountains. The boat carried many happy memories, but was exceptionally fond of one boy in particular, a boy who loved nothing more than his boat...
