Writing Streak: Week 1 Day 1

HEADLINE FROM HOME :

Nicole Alexander (15) of Lancaster wrote something.

Solidarity

united in solidarity

even the birds seem restless now
a squirrel's bounce more staccato
the cars turns slightly sharper
my mother's grasp just a bit tighter

these past days I have seen her transform
a new person born of the craze
unknown to her former gentle touch
"hurry up, grab it",
she scolds me to grab the last container of eggs left

who can blame her
the barren aisles stare back
the most realistic part of this being the panic
the fear that has settled among us

bringing out our worst side
urging us to grab unneeded items
reminding us of our worst selves
a self-regarding side

emails from my school transcending a tone
a tone that in trying to prevent alarm
makes the situation all the more
classes canceled likely for the remainder of the school year

just as a dismal future settles
those fighting are highlighted
medical forces uniting
social media influences spreading positivity
the homeless being supported
a community of...

Save Brookside

Dozens of citizens show up to express their support for a recent controversy in our community. Among them are people from all backgrounds: high school students, war veterans, runners all sharing one combining passion: Save Brookside. This land holds close value to these people both environmentally and personally.

The voice among all share similar themes of anger, contempt for this cause. The cross country team of Walnut High tells anecdotes of running through the “beautiful” routes. Others tell of the times of riding horses at the equestrian center that used to reside there. Some just share the experience they simply received from this singular place. A speaker of the city hall meeting said, “This is really close to my heart because of all the wildlife. They’re making homes out of torn down ones and it’s heartbreaking.” There lies a recurring theme among them; they don’t want to see this place torn down and turned into just another street, no matter...

No Single Story

colors

A lot of us believe that pink is for girls. Blue is for boys. There’s not really a single person to blame for this. It’s just how it is. We don’t really have to think like that though. It’s just how we feel. We make it an argument, but it doesn’t have to be. They’re just colors and the children are just that. Children.

Open Prompt

Me

I constantly ask myself these deep philosophical questions in my mind. When will I ever truly find the answer.

Six-Word Story

Ravishing

The scent of pennies satisfies hunger.

Identity Quilt

Who is I?

I answered one of the most provoking questions in my life, who is I?

  1. How much of your identity is determined by your own choices?
  2. To what extent is your identity determined by others’ labels, assumptions, and/or expectations?
  3. What are some of the benefits and challenges of uniting people of intersectional identities? What actions could an individual take to seek such unity? How about a community? A country?
1. A good deal of my identity is determined by my own choices, while my choices tell a lot of my personality, judgement and beliefs, they do not always tell the entire story. Many of the choices made in public reflect how I want to perceived as. But these are often easily influenced by others, can be split-second and can many times be regrettable. All of us have shared one of these moments that we wish we could take back, but in reality while they are punitive in the moment, they...
