Day One - Elephant Blue
Elephant blue is a colour
which, I believe,
is rare in nature;
yet everywhere, beautiful, in life.

It's the hue I see
hiding, nuanced,
in the edges of succulents
though it doesn't define them.
The grey tinge hinted at in the darkest blue flowers.

It's the mystic aura
that hangs over the horizon
on a cloudy dawn,
when the inferno of sunrise
has been doused by a dribbling sky.

It's navy jeans worn thin with...

Writing Streak Week 2 Day 4 | Love

You may think that the colour of love
is red -
blood, pumping
through two hearts
joined in
passion.
It's everywhere, inescapable
on Valentine's Day you see it all around.

I'd disagree.

Love is golden,
fond, glowing,
the butterflies in your stomach
buzzing
their friends, the fireflies, fizzing
there too.

It's the gentle flicker of romantic candlelight,
glinting on half a century old wedding rings
and casting
broken shadows on the wall.

It smells
like metallic perfume,
lavender and rose...

Writing Streak Week 2 Day 3 | Hardback Lettering

I found this book
in a nook
of a higgledy-piggledy bookshop.
There were books of every age, every type:
novels, maps, sagas,
fact and fiction alike.
But this book, this small, unassuming gem,
caught my eye.

"Star-Land"

The words embossed in glorious gilt
upon the spine,
the gold bronzing
with 120 years of life, of fingers thumbing the cover,
deep in thought
with the mysteries of space
unfurling between the sleeves.

Yet it still remains,
a perfect imprint.

The author's...

There is no glitter in these old walls,
you may believe.
The glamour faded long ago, did it not?
Disappearing, perhaps, in the first centuries of their life.
It did not.
They still sparkle:
with secrets;
with stories;
with age.
The lives of the people that
once
called this place home,
walking the flagstones, knowing they were theirs.
Whose fingers have traced these rivets and dimples?
Whose tears rolled down the rocks,
after receiving the news that their beloved must...

Writing Streak Week 1 Day 5 | The 1 Thing I Wish I'd Never Done, and The 1 Thing I Want People To Know

FREE WRITING

I wish I'd never held on, silent, believing that there was a world out there that would never want to hear my pain or know my struggles. I wish I'd have got help sooner, not waited until I was under so much pressure that the pieces of me fell apart, so that I had to learn to fit together again, instead of repairing the cracks. I wish I'd never turned to the mirror at night and repeated "I hate you"...

Day One - The 6 Types of Ancient Greek Love

We always talk of love as if it were one thing,
reserved for the characters of romantic novels
and the photogenic white weddings we see in the village.

But the Greeks - they saw love as six separate items, each unique in its own right.

One - Eros.
Passion
The love that burns infernos in our stomachs,
butterflies becoming warriors.
A want. A need.
The love that makes the phrase
"a...

A Letter To The Universe

PROMPT: Letter Writing Competition 2020

Dear Universe,

I don't believe in God. Not a singular one anyway. I think sometimes the Ancient Greeks and Romans got it right - after all, how could one Being listen to every question, and provide every answer? There aren't enough hours in the day, surely. Then one day my dearest turned to me, and told her theory. She told me she believed in a world protected by you, not a finite number of higher powers, but an infinite...
