quiet growl with each stroke, with each breath,
(only broken machinery makes noise)

and she presses her dense turgid little body against mine
for five minutes
(two years at most)

after which

PROMPT: What Came Before

BERTIE
Have an apple, dear. You can’t live on cereal and Go-Gurt alone.

CARMEN
(mouth full, chewing on a massive spoonful of Lucky Charms)
You’re not even a real doctor, don’t tell me what to do --

(JASMINE enters the kitchen, dressed in a Patriots sweater...

Uncertainty

PROMPT: Becoming Human

There's always something sad about a plastic bag in a tree. It flaps piteously, trapped in the one place it doesn't belong, crying for its mother to take it home and tuck it, neatly, into its bed by the recycle bin. A child lost in the city. But who is there to rescue it? There used to be truant officers, indifferent-faced volunteers with ominous long spikes who jabbed the bags senseless before hauling them off to jail. PROMPT: Becoming Human
