His mother smiled in amusement, and looked out the car window. The moon was glowing proudly, illuminating the raindrops that slid down the cold glass. She turned to her husband, who took one hand off the steering wheel to adjust his glasses.

I shuffled forward in shoes that were falling apart, brushing my fingers over a huge selection of shiny, new ones.

"This one?" I suggested, pointing at a pair of cosy-looking blue pumps.

My mum and I were shopping for shoes because my old ones had worn out. Worn out being an understatement; I had, for a long time, neglected to inform her that the bottom of my left shoe had almost completely come out, and flapped loudly against the floor...
