I met the Queen and had tea with her after I defeated a dragon with my trusty katanas. Then I accidentally spilled hot tea in some noble’s face, so I was banished from England. If I return, I'll be executed on spot.

The 2D Man

FREE WRITING

Portraits came to life, then fell. Colored pencils littered the table. Semi-realistic faces began staring back as I drew. Days of practice reduced new pencils to centimeter-long stubs. I grabbed a box.
New pencils slid like rosin-covered bows; stiff hands relaxed. The shading clicked into place as if I’d blown away dust, revealing hidden skills. The image jumped out, stood, then drifted downward.
Why isn’t it 3D?! I thrust my eraser against the drawing,...

The Penguin Parlor Prisoner

PROMPT: Flash Fiction Competition 2019

Life is a cup of moldy vanilla ice cream. It was once enjoyable, then its pleasant flavor disappeared. Every day, I fail to convince myself that life doesn’t suck as I slip on a jacket over multiple shirts, trudge to Penguin Parlor, sell cavities in a bowl or cone—your choice, and watch as everyone drips liquid diabetes onto the floor that I just cleaned.
“Excuse me,” a nasally voice interrupts.
    I arch an eyebrow.   ...

Stabbed Through the Heart #Home

FREE WRITING

The quick strikes of sabres, the silver of lamé,
the beeping of scoring machines, and "En garde. Pret. Allez!"
swirl about me as I enter my club.
My sabre's rubber grip has a tear from five years of use;
permanent sweat stains mar my jacket and underarm protector.
Stamps from competitions adorn my mask;
my second glove threatens to tear.
With bent knees, sabre high, and mask on,
my worries dissipate as the director commands "En garde!"

Alone, not Lonely

FREE WRITING

I like to be alone, but I'm not lonely.
People say solitude makes you crazy,
but it makes me free.
People say I'm cold as ice,
but I just see past their lies.
I want to hide in my thoughts,
I don't want to see their faults.
Solitude is my friend,
but loneliness never comes.

Yes, I'm sometimes apathetic.
Yes, I think you're somewhat pathetic.
I'm too blunt, but you can't see
that I'll never be who you want me...

The Chairs

FREE WRITING

Two seats were vacant, one table empty. Tick. Tock. I waited. My lust-filled eyes attached themselves to the chairs, my feet itching for rest. Tick. Tock.
    "What may I get you?"
    "Small coffee. Black."
    "Coming right up!"
Tick. Tock. I stood, awaiting my order. Tick. Tock. An elderly woman inched her walker towards the chairs.
    "Small black coffee!"
    Snatching the coffee, I bolted.
    Smack! My...

I am Darkness

FREE WRITING

Your monologue was well done. You did a great job of giving examples of what darkness has to go through such as putting up with "Dark Times" and being perceived as a threat. You also made darkness seem very wise,...
