Rock in a River

PROMPT: Flash Fiction Competition 2021

August. “Goodbye,” father murmurs. It’s cold here, a mix of AC and stares. I yearn for home. I blink, red blue lights take me away in sirens. 34 reads the heart monitor. September. This strange place is home now. Songs flush away fear. Letter ink stains my fingers. “You can’t go home.” October. I am a rock in a river. When do I recover? November. “I’m hurting without you,” writes my sister. Fear tastes like supplement shakes. For her, I...

The Ban Against Olympian of Color Sparks Allegations of Systematic Injustice

PROMPT: Sports Writing Competition 2021

The 2016 Olympic Gold medalist in the 100-meter hurdles left the world in disarray after being banned from the games for 5 years after allegedly tampering with doctors notes.

Isolation

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Listen to your therapist, imagine a beach

But how can you imagine paradise when your stuck inside a cage
Your thoughts have lit a fire that explodes in rage

Only nice people end up here
Because kindness is rare in a world of fear

Tug of War
Let your hands tug on not the threading of the coiled rope
but on the inner belief system of the child's impressionable mind

Let your words twist and turn until trust has broke
Bewildered, you will be, when your child will fall behind

Tug of War
When your hands are quicker to point than they are to hug
comfort will only be found through prescription drug

Inquire their feelings only when it suits you
Don't awe when...

My Dream

PROMPT: Dream Big

Hardships bring out the courage, the vulnerabilities, the fears, and the desires in people. I wouldn't call it luck, but I've been fortunate to live to tell the stories of my own hardship. Particularly, the extensive journey I undertook as a result of anorexia and substance abuse. I didn't know what true courage was until I was able to see the girls and guys around me, struggling just as much as I was, take a bite of their food, or...
