a lost classroom

PROMPT: Returning

The barren courtyard looks smaller than it used to. The red tables, eight seats each, sink into the gray gravel, ready to bear the weight of students. I scuff my shoes on the concrete and then sit down. I listen for the quiet hum of classrooms, communities which I am not a part of anymore. Distant shouts and screams from the black top and playground, nothing but an extra recess friday for the small ones.

FREE WRITING

I sit down in class and realize I've forgotten to bring a pen. There's one lying on the desk, so I pick it up and doodle a quick stick figure to see if it has any ink. It does. But the figure I just drew looks up at me and then jumps off the page. 

Figures. With one quick swipe, I grab the wriggling figure and stick him in my pocket. Hmph. Time for geometry.

PROMPT: Food Writing Competition 2019

I've had matzo ball soup for as long I as can remember. My mother's side of the family is the jewish side. I always told my friends proudly that we celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas. I loved Christmas, but I loved listening to Jewish lore better.
