there is nothing in my head.

FREE WRITING

there is nothing in my head
i feel and i feel and i feel and i feel absolutely Nothing
it’s funny how Nothing doesn’t exist
the absence of space is still filled with air
a Something
it’s a Something until we’re all sucked away into a black hole
a void
it’s impossible to do Nothing
to stay perfectly still, not breathing
it’s impossible until you die

am i the void, then?

there is a sinking in my stomach
it’s hunger ...

shades of tenderness

FREE WRITING

two brightly colored hands touching fingertips
orange and persimmon and fuchsia
roughly shaded in with shiny markers

tenderness. a funny thing
longing and yearning and comfort
novels have been written about the passion of Red and Even Brighter Red
the desolation and destruction that comes with Dark Red

but tenderness isn’t red.
it’s orange, and persimmon, and definitely a shade of fuchsia
it’s two brightly colored hands
touching fingertips
it’s two softer hands, cut out from magazines
and it’s all...

i don't write on thursdays

FREE WRITING

it's not that I can't write on a thursday
but that I'd rather not
what's good about thursdays - tell me, seriously
nothing but bland and beige
and thirty poems about khaki
starts to feel like a father's day barbecue

I didn't know my father
why does he appear in my dreams
faded, head to toe grayscale, a shadow
it's him
I'm sure

maybe he would've been tall
we'd play catch together
on our plastic suburban front lawn
maybe he...

she was icarus and the sun

FREE WRITING

your soft hair against my forehead
my forehead pressed to yours
there was so much you left unsaid
as you leaned against the cool steel doors

your heart had just been broken
and I was the only one you told
I took it as a small token
but your eyes remained stone-cold

I could come up with thousands of words
about how you deserved so much more
because he was a fool and a coward
who'd left you...

shakespeare's hamlet paints a picture of love and loss
and losing yourself on the way
but no picture painted has ever been greater
than ophelia by john everett millais
The Girl in the river
drowned, unremembered
at the hands of her king,
gone insane

maybe we’ve brought it upon ourselves
cloaked in the shadows, no stars in sight
maybe it’s better to hide away in the wings
instead of being center stage, soaked in spotlights
theatre is like ballet, but more poetry
it’s a...

the prima ballerina

FREE WRITING

I grew up on ballet
at night, I’d dream of swan lake.
odette and odile
the girl in white, and the girl in black
yin and yang, good and evil
the balance in the world
destiny, love, and death
it might’ve taught me how cruel the world really was
if I hadn’t been too simple and small to listen.
instead, I learned the world isn’t black and white
the world is multicolored, in all sorts of shades of grey.

my whole childhood revolved around ballet
a girl in pink,...
