Ached to pucker under noon.
To hurt
        in the summer,
to pale,
to redden,
        to white.
That feeling of peeling and undoing
and the sun’s rays
to give you a saltwater bath burning
as it burns, because it only works
if it hurts, is only beautiful if it bleeds.
        A reddening of your cheeks,

Us in your car

Your car window is clear --
my breath creates fog against the glass,
but I see it all anyway.
Outside, it is a wasteland, desolate
as the end of the world. Through the window
I can feel it on my skin. That cold desert,
that empty land stretching

FREE WRITING

something else has softened, too, as I spend my afternoons in soft blankets,
as I see only beautiful things, as I have what I have,
which...

first, i must remember the fires.
whatever burns beneath us all
is further than instinct, deeper than bone.
i can’t feel it now, but i know it is there.
once there was flame, pooling savagely
like hot blood
underneath my skin, propelled
by whatever it is that exists in my chest
when i sit in the car and see
the end of the world, or when i am alone and awake
for too long, or when i dream
in flashes...
