Message from Writer

“I only know that learning to believe in the power of my own words has been the most freeing experience of my life. It has brought me the most light. And isn't that what a poem is? A lantern glowing in the dark.”

An Epic

FREE WRITING

I was considering putting a poem on the back of my AP Literature scrapbook page, which is our final assignment for the class. I asked a confidant which one from my portfolio would be best, and he replied that I could write a new one. I conceded that I wasn’t sure I’d have the energy, and his response made me think: “It doesn’t have to be an epic.” I think this represents a way in which we can view life...

Assorted Vignettes

May 25, 2018:
The lights go down and scattered conversations dim to a murmur, then nothing at all. For a moment, it is silent; then, the music begins and the spotlight flickers on to illuminate a man standing center stage. “How does a…” and so it goes: the opening monologue of Hamilton, a quintessential modern musical that tells of our past, begins. I can’t explain the emotion that pervades the experience or the tears that form in the corner of...

My Mixtape

PROMPT: Mixtape

"I'm Good" by The Mowgli's: the singer is content with their life as it is. They are "good with [them]self... good with [their] friends", and they need nothing more. They only seek to make the world a better, more loving place and are tired of living up to expectations. I believe I will be 'good' with myself, some friends, and a passion to carry me through life -- nothing more, nothing less.

"Waving Through A Window" from Dear Evan Hansen: this...

Ecclesiastes 3:5a "A time to gather stones and a time to cast away stones..."

The only openness I tend to is that of the mind.
I gather my secrets like
stones, an ever-present weight on my
crooked back -- another burden I keep under wraps. The ease
with which many feel compelled to spill their souls astounds me;
I wish the same heart of trust I would possess --
and for the best it may be:
is pain abandoned pain forgotten?
I can start small, shedding but
a few stones, arranging them
into an...

The metronome's steady beat pounds in my
head like waves beating on the shoreline, tempo
eroded into my mind over each and every hour.

I lean on the first note of every sixteenth note
cluster, limping through my etudes, repeating
the pattern in every possible permutation.

I watch the tuner's color oscillate almost
imperceptably between red and green, holding a
concert A until the needle stills before I move up the scale.

I take a shuddering breath through infected lungs, ...

Generous Listening

PROMPT: #ListenFirst

What does generous listening mean to me?
It's almost midnight, and the blue light from my phone illuminates my face. I blink, trying to keep my eyes open as I watch those three dots on my screen. I'm tempted to respond to what I have already received, but I sense that there is more to be said. I can already sense how exhausted I will be in the morning, but what is an hour or two of sleep compared to the...

Things I Wish I Did on a Regular Basis

PROMPT: Self-Respect

1. I practice without letting my mind wander, keeping the outside forces of distraction from tainting the quality of my efforts. I can tell that I have made progress, and I am satisfied with my efforts.

2. I take a shower, brush my hair, wash my face, brush my teeth, and trim my nails. I do nothing to change my appearance, but simply bring it to a minimum of cleanliness.

3. I do not insert myself as a mediator into...

I won't pretend
that I was your best
friend, that you even
crossed my mind before I
heard your name flit
past my ear in the
middle of health class; I
leaned closer, whispered
"What happened?"

Remember that one day on
the playground, chasing me all
out of breath
as I showed you the
best place to hide from
the class bully?

"What happened" I said
louder, almost pleading.

You couldn't even run
this time, when that car
sprung from...
