For all my life, she always smiled knowingly at me. I remember the days when she was smiling from the spotless marble wall.

Now, she is smiling knowingly, as always, from the yellow, tobacco-stained motel wall. Her striking lemon dress has faded. In the fake neon-light from the window, she glimmers, assuring me, "I understand.

I murmur: "I want to sell this."
"This painting's worth $20." I hear a monotone. 

A soggy, booze-stained bill in hand, I stare blankly...

She smiled, knowingly, from behind the spotless marble wall, seeing a ten-year-old me in muddy white trousers, frog in hand. "Don't get caught," she seemed to say. 

Now, she is smiling knowingly, as always, from the yellow, tobacco-stained motel wall. In the fake neon-light, she glimmers, assuring me, "I understand.
