I am breaking through walls to get to you
I scream until my lungs give out for you to hear me
Can you hear me?
My thoughts hold me hostage and you are not here to save me from them
I fall asleep every night hoping you are there cradling me when I wake
I wake up and you are still gone
Do you miss me momma?
Today I told my teacher how great you are
I wrote your name...

He shouldn’t have said it. He knew that. Manny thought about calling his father the whole drive to school. To apologize for the other night. He was tired of the tension between them since the argument. He got out of his car and walked toward the school building. There were about six cars in the school’s parking lot. Manny was early. He walked by the sign that read, “Welcome back students!” It has been up since August. It’s now November....

Momma

I am breaking through walls to get to you
I scream until my lungs give out for you to hear me
Can you hear me?
My thoughts hold me hostage and you are not here to save me from them
I fall asleep every night hoping you are there cradling me when I wake
I wake up and you are still gone
Do you miss me momma?
Today I told my teacher how great you are
I wrote your name all over my notebook with a permanent marker
I went home and I cried out for you
Every tear pounded the floor as they fell along with my fists
And I didn’t just stop there
As my cry grew louder my ears rang
I thought maybe she could hear me if I got louder
I ran through the house and screamed your name like it was the only thing
I knew how to say
They all tried to stop me ...

It’s now November. Manny held the door for the girl walking a few feet behind him. She thanked him, and he nodded in response. He made his way to the class. He figured since class hadn’t started yet, he’d wait outside. He began to pace. He would want me to call and talk to him.Manny thought. His father was a forgiving man. It was just words. Manny took his phone out of his pocket. He wiped his sweaty palm onto his year-old...

Sunflowers

I loved the way you bloomed. The way your mind sprouted every perplexing thought. How your eyes saw past my bracts of contradiction And could see my petals of capability. You were exquisite. Your colors so vibrant, no one could compete in my eyes. You stood taller than the rest. That way, everyone could see you at your highest. Your red burned like growing fire. Your yellow, blindingly bright. Thistles painful if the wrong spot is touched. How could you get hurt by the one of the most beautiful things? I could only admire your beauty from afar. We rose in different directions. What rooted us snapped faster than expected And all we were left with were remainders. Attracted all, we were sunflowers. Together, nothing could compare.
But even the most beautiful flowers die.

Him

His expression was unsure. He took a step towards me, and took my hand. His eyes fixed on mine. "I love you," He sincerely admits.

A Note to You

I remember times when you were a different person. When our smiles were genuine.
When every time you raised your hand it didn’t result in bruised skin. There was comfort within your arms. Then you flirted with misery until it followed you like a dark cloud. The blunts you smoked turned into your safe haven. Every inhale you blew punches and my arms shielded your weapons. Flinching became a conditioned response. I told my friends you weren’t always like this. You’d show love before your I love you’s became something convenient to say.
There was once warmth in your touch. Now the only thing warm about you is the thing between your legs that just won’t stop giving. I cut myself open and held my heart out  just for you to use it against me. You’ve held a knife to your chest but I ended up being stabbed.
I wanted you to see me again, but all you saw was...
