PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

I want to thank my father,
my father who has so much faith
in melody, who can trust in the invisible
forces that make dime-store jingles and sonatas.
The diaphanous paths that lead me
to Mozart and Bach.

I want to thank him
for the way my fingers flicker
over a string, the strength of discovering something-
as if I’d stumbled on a diamond big as a shoe;
as if I’d found magic in the crannies
of my closet....

because she had to learn to see
                 beyond the light,
            beyond the movement
        stranded by its language
because she had to learn to believe nothing

            cleave a room
        memorize its shadows,
                    be still for the empty
                stage, say dance,
            say dance anyway

PROMPT: Given First Line

This is an amazing piece, and a pleasure to read! Work to address the slightly cliched nature of the plot(an abandoned lover and heartbreak are common tropes). Keep writing- this is awesome!

Two Limericks

PROMPT: The Limerick

A creature of charm is the cow.
So wonderfully, implausibly highbrow.
In the mornings they eat,
Evenings, repeat.
They pass gas with an elegant pow!

There was an old poet named Peter.
Upon insanity he teetered.
While he wrote his rhymes,
He'd list out word crimes,
And say "Oh, I've messed up the meter!"
