PROMPT: Refuge

What’s refuge?
Refuge is safe.
For me, refuge is ever-changing,
yet all the same.
For me, refuge is in my room while my parents have an argument.
Refuge is in a long-awaited and needed hug.
Refuge is in my prayer corner.
Refuge is escape.
Refuge is in the books I read and the places that the pages portray.
Refuge is in the funny social media videos or marvel fandoms.
For many, refuge is people.
Refuge is in my creative writing...

The Cathedral's on Fire

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

My skin is peeling on my thumb
Just another pain to keep me numb.

The book I grasp is red,
emulating the passions of the dead.
It’s an alarm to the reader,
as a siren sounds to awake the nearest dreamer.

I make the sign of the cross,
hoping that the familiar noise does not mean another loss.
My friend turns and shows me his hand,
upon which is a mosquito’s blood streak -- just a strand.

My teacher’s face...

Cultivating Love

PROMPT: Tiny Love Story

You plant a seed of devotion in my heart,
patiently waiting for the blooming to start.
You fertilize, water, and shield with care,
to protect my plant from evil snares.
You watch as the seedling continues to sprout,
there for it all—even through the drought.
You instilled in me a measly mustard seed,
but what grows is an overgrown oak tree.
It grows,
grows,
grows and grows,
until it becomes beautiful prose.

This cultivation of love I will never be...

PROMPT: Tiny Love Story

Oh, the way you make me feel.
It's a phrase I utter every time I think of you.
No matter how I am feeling, you feel the same way, too.
I feel the beat of your heart pulsing through my veins.
You move me.
You play my soul like it's a mere instrument; another one of your devices of allurement.
You are constantly in my head,
shouting your rhythm of love.
It baffles me that anyone could live without you,...

If I were a flower...

PROMPT: Environmental Writing Competition September 2018

If I were a flower
I'd bloom the tallest,
grasping at the heavens.
Or if I were the smallest,
I wonder if I would be equipped with weapons.
If I were a flower, I'd be the prettiest
--IN THE GARDNER'S EYES, of course.
Or maybe I'd be the wittiest,
growing in the opposite direction and the wrong course.
If I were a flower, I'd have the sweetest nectar,
freely and selflessly giving of myself to nourish others. ...

Beloved

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2018

Is this how it begins?
You look in the mirror
And you feel unworthy.
Unloved.
Focusing not on the
Trophies:
Honor roll.
Awards:
The Optimist.
Instead, you focus on your
Face:
Scarred.
Your Body:
Stretched.
Is this how it begins?
Is this how you lose your confidence?

You’re standing there.
You’re hungry for compliments.
But not too much.

“You look beautiful today!”
“Thank you so much!”
“Look, how gorgeous you are!”
“Oh thanks.”
“You radiate beauty!”
“Oh stop. Thank you.” ...
