Drug Culture at FUHSD

PROMPT: Op-Ed Competition 2019

Most California high schools, if not all, will have students who dabble in illegal substances, alcohol, or nicotine products. However, most teachers have a double standard, in which they will censure cheating and other forms of academic dishonesty, but turn a blind eye to students using these illegal substances. I think drug and alcohol abuse is the biggest issue among the students of FUHSD because it will permanently affect their futures without them realizing due to their underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex.

Tyrone Walker

PROMPT: Novel Writing Competition 2018

Scene 1: In which Tyrone Walker gets into a gang fight and gets arrested by Officer Miller

“Shit!” I say. DeShaun has my back though. He immediately lunges at the Gorer who ambushed me outside my own school.
“Damn Gorer cholo!” he screams. DeShaun is a good fighter. He may not look it, but...

Equanimity

PROMPT: Personal Essay Competition: Making Change

As our charter buses pulled into the parking lot filled with snow, 200 kids anxious from sitting in a humid environment with poor air circulation flowed out onto the campgrounds like Americans on Black Friday. My friends and I, being that we were in eighth grade and consequently had eighth grade mindsets, thought that sitting at the back of the bus would make us the cool kids. What a stupid decision! As we watched through the windows from inside the...

Death is a Grocery Store Clerk (humorous)

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2018

Death is the reaper of life
Sickle in its skeletal hand
A list of names on the monitor
He scans the barcode on your forehead
To check your expiration date
If not, he asks for a runner to return you to the aisle.
He scans the head of Mary Sue
Born February 8, 1972.
“Says here you were in a car crash
And you’re currently in the emergency room” he muses.
“Well, what’s it going to be?” asked Mary Sue. ...

California's Education System is Falling Behind

PROMPT: Op-Ed Competition 2018

California's education system is falling behind other schools across the country. The problem when California teachers are unmotivated to improve the minds of students, and only care about getting a bigger paycheck is that students are not being prepared for life in the real world. I live in Silicon Valley where big tech companies require...
