In 1767 on the Caribbean island of St. Croix, the church condemned Rachel Faucette-Hamilton and her son, Alexander, for her marriage to a second husband and illegitimate conception. Soon after, she and her son Alexander contracted an unspecified disease. They lay side by side in defecation, flatulence, and fever in the single upstairs bed. Rachel passed away from the illness, but Alexander survived. He often felt bitterly ashamed of his heritage; historians speculate that Rachel may have also resented him...
