Bethia Maria

Canada

I’m a musician who loves chocolate, school work, and hanging out with family and friends. I read too much, write to little, and create worlds in my head. I’m passionate about life, and love sharing my joy with others through music and writing.

Message from Writer

As a writer, there are a number of quotes that keep me grounded and remind me of why I'm here. Enjoy :)

A Word is dead,
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just
Begins to live
That day.
~ Emily Dickinson

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31

Poetry and Hums aren't things which you get, they're things which get you. And all you can do is to go where they can find you. ~ A.A. Milne

The secret is Christ in me, not in a different set of circumstances. ~ Elizabeth Elliot

I don’t know which is more discouraging, literature or chickens. ~ E. B. White

Pains of love be sweeter far than all other pleasures are. ~ John Dryden

It's catching, this joy. She makes me want to laugh; my words take on her brighter tone, and my feet move to her dance.

For the Future

A Letter From Someone's Mother

April 24, 2018
From Elisabeth
To be opened by my oldest great-great-grandchild in 2118:

Hello! This is your great-great grandmother Elisabeth. As per instructions given to my oldest child (which he/she should then give their their oldest child, etc.), this should come into your hands on May 1, 2118. You see, I have been renovating my kitchen, and when I pulled out the old cupboards, I found a tin box stuck in a hollow in the wall. Inside the box was a letter, which I am now forwarding to you, as I believe it concerns you, or at least one of your cousins. I trust you will know what the letter refers to, and will remedy the situation accordingly.

Ten Things I Know To Be True

Life is complex,
complicated,
convoluted.
It's a swirling galaxy of thoughts and emotions,
ever changing, ever the same…
it sparkles with ideas,
facts and fictions flare across its mysterious frontier.
It shines with gladness, sadness,
and everything in-between.

Listen! Fear is destructive.
It takes me, unmakes me,
warps me beyond recognition.
It buries confidence, smothers with shame,
strangles surety, security.
It is the sword at the throat of courage,
challenging bravery day after wearisome day.
I stand paralyzed,
dread holds me hypnotized,
I flee traumatized.
This is not good!
Trust me, there must be something stronger.

And sometimes, I don’t need a hug,
I can’t candle the touch,
it’s all too much,
but oh, how I could use some hope.
It’s another thing to hold, true,
but look, it makes the black sky turn blue!
I’m still stuck in this place,
but grace makes it easier to breath.

People are wonderful! ...

A book,
A different life,
An escape.
He’s someone else:
Prince Caspian,
Sherlock Holmes,
Frodo Baggins.
It’s safer here,
Where adventure is brave,
not wearisome.

Foster Sister

My first word was “outside". My mom likes to tell how I, a tiny dark-eyed child hardly higher than her knees, would brace myself against the glass door, and beg to be taken “ou’side” to explore.

You know, not all kids have moms who can remember their first words. Not all kids have moms who can unlock to them the fascinating world of “outside,” who can take them by the hand and laugh as they feel the grass between their toes for the first time. Not all kids have moms who know how to take care of them, teach them, or love them.

Some moms don’t want to.
Some moms don’t know how to.
Some moms are unable to.

Some kids don't have moms at all.

So where does that leave these little wide-eyed toddlers like me who stand at the window and want so badly to go outside that they use the one word they know?...

Acrostic Verse

Bravery

Battered, defiant, holding back shame,
“Rash” they call him, like its his name,
Anna, his mother, of scandalous ways,
Visiting strangers, missing for days.
Everything’s different, now she’s in her grave,
Rather than running, he dares them to save
Young and foolish, but maybe he's brave.

Kingdom's Maask

They told me, beware the Queen’s Maask. They told me it moves unseen, quiet as night. They told me its stench is that of death, at least for us who know death so intimately; apparently to friends of the wicked throne it smells of fragrant flowers.

I had scoffed.

I could deal with the Maask; hadn’t I dealt with the Royal Guards, the maids? I was known as The Fearless One. Nothing would stop me from reaching the Queen and finishing my task.

But now it loomed before me, filling the entire stone corridor with fear. A cape of shifting shadows hid its form, its head protruding from hunched shoulders a foot higher than mine. I could hear the rasp of its breath even over my own laboured breathing; it smelled like corpses.

Beware the Queen’s Maask, they had said. Beware, for it is loyal.

I had laughed.

Look where loyalty got us: starving, homeless, slaves to an unjust...

Now Friendship

Friendship is the now of love. It is the here, the together, the never-ending moment of this. Friendship is the shimmering joy of unison, and it doesn't matter if it wasn't here yesterday and won't be here tomorrow, because this is now, and this is love.
