Innocent Perfection

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2018

Chubby hands grabbed
The aquamarine crayon held in tight grip
And tiny face etched in concentration
It had to be perfect.

More red
She reached out for the cherry colored crayon,
More green
She grasped the neon green,
Too much yellow
And the eyes scrunched in agony
The hands seized
And unlawful paper was ripped and bitten in torment
The tearstained lips quivering,
She wiped her tears.

It would have to be made again.

The colored wax...

The Clock is Ticking

PROMPT: Monster Flash Fiction Competition 2018

We go along our days, mostly unaware. Of those who are completely conscious of it, the majority are haunted. Others are strangely calm.

Time, itself, is comprehensible. No one has ever claimed it does not exist. Even the tiniest of children have some sense of it. The older they get, the more they must confront it, and the more afraid they become. Many struggle to ignore it, but its dark, chilling shadow still looms over them, and everyone. Time...

Plain January

PROMPT: “In January”

In January

Tomorrow’s promise
Is eight inches of snow
That the howling wind
Is sure to deliver

I stroke my mother’s hair
As we talk
And she coughs
Though her bad cold
Is fading away

The heater is on full blast
But still the cold seeps
Through the windows
And piles of blankets
That we wrapped around ourselves

And as the stars spark
On this somehow cloudless night
I climb to my bed
And grab my...

My December, of Sand and Sun

PROMPT: My December Competition 2017

December. When the month is distant, its name in conversation doesn’t bring anything specific to mind. I do not know what month comes before or after another until the months have already dawned. I cannot yet order the months, and my conception of their order is often vague, and mostly flawed. Their names float in a void, and never fall in order unless a calendar stares at me with beady eyes.
Sometimes, when it has not yet approached, and when...
