Even though I'm smiling
It's just a mask I wear
Can you really not tell the difference
Or do you just not care

You tell me all your troubles
Don't listen when I tell mine
So I hide them away
And box them up, cry all through the night

I wonder if I'm just a person
A girl for you to play
I can't believe that you
Can care when you act this way

You tell me you feel fine ...

Midnight Violets

I have never been afraid of anything.
    Not even Death himself.
In fact, some would say Death is my friend.
I stare out the window, waiting. It's dark out, almost midnight. I watch the stars, the angels watching over us. I can tell when he arrives. Black smoke curls around the room, thin and translucent.
"Nice to see you again." he whispers, his voice not one but many, as though all the souls of the dead are speaking at once, a beautiful, terrifying chorus of voices mixing and blending into one.
    "Likewise."
I turn away from the window and smile. A clock hangs on the wall, ticking away. The Angel touches it, silencing the soft ticking. Your time is up. He is a figure made of pure darkness, an empty, black void in the shape of an angel, wings spread as though about to fly away. ...

Shadows

Even though I'm smiling
It's just a mask I wear
Can you really not tell the difference
Or do you just not care

You tell me all your troubles
Don't listen when I tell mine
So I hide them away
And box them up, cry all through the night

I wonder if I'm just a person
A girl for you to play
I can't believe that you
Can care when you act this way

You tell me you feel fine
And I know that that's the truth
But you don't ask me how I feel
Don't offer any ruth

I tell the world I'm happy
When I'm the opposite of that
I've forgotten what it really means
To me it's a cover-up

You tell me all you ever want
Is just me and you
I know better, but I play along
'Cause I know you want me to

Depression

The broken heart still crumpled, lying in my hand
It's other half still buried a mile underground
Time will heal, is what they say
But this wound's so deep it'll never go away
A sister gone; a best friend departed
Before her journey had been properly started
My heart went too, God knows where
I covered my emptiness, space with only air
No one offered to help; no one understood
I guess no one really would
I drowned in my misery, I fought to stay afloat
Day after day, silent screams tore my throat
I've given up, I'm sinking now
If help's anywhere near, it's too late anyhow

Open Prompt

Arsonist

I set a fire
I watched it grow
I wondered how
I fell so low

An arsonist, they call me
Well they just wait and see
Listen while I burn them down,
For I'll be laughing loud with glee

I swear to you that I will rise
I'll be stronger than everything
I'll conquer, burn, destroy
The way that you burned me

My soul charred black
My heart a void
I don't believe in love
My trust's destroyed

But fire burns beneath my skin
Love replaced with hate
A kind of searing hatred
That only revenge can sate

I'll burn down everything so you will know:
I'm dangerous as a fire
You can play me, so long's you know
The game you play is dire

Those Who Rule the World

We are rebels
We are danger
We are devils dressed as angels
We are the beauty sprung from pain
We are confidant, we are brave-
We know exactly who we will be
Someday, it is us who will rule the earth
We will be cruel; we won't care
You envy us, I know
Our beauty, our cruelty
We look like smoke, dangerously beautiful
We act like fire, wrecking chaos and destruction
And we love it

Talking to “You”

Summertime

The summer is your favorite time of year. It's when the plums from the tree in your front yard ripen; when your siblings throw soccer balls up the tree and you run below, dodging the balls and catching the fruit, which is so juicy it falls apart in your hands, leaving you to lick the juice running down your fingers and cringe at the sour peel. It is the time of year when the swimming pool is open and you come to the dinner table dripping wet, plum juice staining your clothes. It is when you scale the trees in the back yard, you and your siblings daring other to climb higher, all of you jumping from the tree, laughing. And now, once again, summer has begun.

The Color Purple

I wore heels. Black ones. I was desperate, clinging to them like a lifeline. They were the only black I wore, the only sign that I was mourning- and at that, a small one. Her casket was open. I bent to kiss her forehead, as I had done so often before, and forced my eyes to remain dry. I never believed a person could ever feel so cold. It wasn't possible. It shouldn't have been. Her skin was hard, too. Stiff. She did not look like my sister. She did not look like anyone. The rows of people lounging on the church pews watched me like on would watch the lead actor in a play. I was almost mad at them, for staring like that. They didn't understand. They clutched their invitations and watched me return to my seat. I only reached for a tissue when they turned away their attention shifting to watch something, someoneelse. A pastor spoke. My...

Picture Perfect

A picture perfect family
Without a single flaw
A happy, loving family
With the perfect ma

True, a tiny house they had
That they did not own
But how could this matter
So long's they weren't alone

For they had each other
To comfort and support;
To live their little lives
Inside their little fort

How I wish we could have stayed
The way we used to be
For surely now, you can see
We aren't the perfect family
