Dreamer. Writer. Reader. Explorer. I don't remember the day I started writing it just happened. I do remember though, that I never considered myself a writer. I never knew "writer" was a thing I could be.

Some of my favorite writing quotes which I now share with you

“In three words I can sum up everything I learned about life: it goes on” - Robert Frost

"You don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That's why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence." -Octavia E. Butler

"Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable"

"If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it." -Toni Morrison

"To love is to act" - Victor Hugo

"We read to know we're not alone." -William Nicholson

"I lived in books more than I lived anywhere else." -Neil Gaiman

I remember
calling my mother
from my grandmother’s landline

it was one of those old landlines
with the spiral cord
that prevented you from leaving the kitchen
I loved that phone
it made me feel vintage
walking in circles
twisting the cord around my finger

I remember
watching my grandmother make phone calls
how she would hover by the phone
after dialing
forgetting the phone cord extended
or sit at one of the chairs at the kitchen table
gabbing on...

We were all sitting on the hill, John and Monica and I, looking out over the pond, watching the children canoeing, placing bets on who would tip first and fall in with a splash screaming in fright about leeches and mud and snapping turtles, casting lots for which one of us would play hero and jump in to rescue them.

There were thirteen in their family. I never met more than eight. I didn’t need to ask to know thirteen...

“Daddy? I can’t see!” I was standing in a cloud.  I am a grounded person, but ever since I can remember I have longed to be at the tops of mountains, in particular, Mt. Washington. It was President’s Day weekend again. Our tradition was not to honor our first president on his birthday, rather to celebrate a coming together of family and friends.
The first time I hiked this mountain I was in eighth grade. I had never been more...

Hartford Through My Eyes

PROMPT: Travel Writing Competition 2018

I come from the city. A city where diversity thrives. Where people look at me incredulously. Think where I live is dangerous. Think I must be brave to live there. But it is only a city. A sanctuary city. A city filled with insurance companies. And a gridlocked highway. And too many parks and schools to count.
Yet, I have learned, over the years, that each city has its own, natural music. I listen to this music, sitting on my...

Poem to a Great Friend

She bought a mango at the market today
The place it grew from so far away
Yet now it is here
And just for the two of us
But one day we will travel to where the mangos grow
Pick them ripe off the tree
And eat them fresh
The mango is plump in my hand
I peel it
Standing at the oak kitchen island with a knife
She laughs as I pare off sections
Avoiding the pit
She jots...

Shhh. Quiet!
If you listen closely you can hear the earth’s heartbeat, left here by the gods of old. She has been sleeping for as long as humankind can remember, since the last great war, and no, not that great war. The war of the gods. The war between the sky and the earth, the moon and the stars. Wars between the humans are only trifles, mere unrest among the weak.
And if you’re really quiet, after it rains, you...

Student's Time to Speak Up

PROMPT: Op-Ed Competition 2018

Children are dying. We are in a time of domestic peace and children are dying. There is a saying, “In peace, sons bury fathers. In war, fathers bury sons.”
Yet, this is a time of “peace,” and parents are burying their children. Their murdered children. We go to school every day and we never expect anything to go wrong, but now we are at risk that every day in school could be our last. That is no way to live. ...
