I have two requirements for a good book: really epic or really funny. (Both would be preferable.)

A Day at the Beach

PROMPT: Open Prompt

Once, at the beach,
on a Saturday evening,
I met Death.
He asked in a voice
like the waves caressing the shore
if I would walk with him
for he was lonely.
I took his thin and trembling hand
and into the ocean
we disappeared.
He told me to not be afraid,
for he would always be at my side.
For a while we flew oh-so-freely,
like he was Peter Pan and I was Wendy.
But then, like a magician’s...

PROMPT: Love in Words

Hey.

You're probably wondering who I am.

You probably don't recognise my first name, at the very least. My last, you should know. There was only one girl named 'Greene' on your street. Only one girl named 'Siobhan' too. But that was a stupid name, so I changed it. I'm Willow Greene now. It sounds better, doesn't it? At least everyone stops wondering how to pronounce my name.

Maybe you still don't remember me; I was your age--fifteen--when we first...

PROMPT: Love in Words

do you remember
that september morning
when you came knocking on my door
and laughed because
i still had curlers in my hair
and you told me to follow you
to the lake
whose name i have forgotten
(i hope you have not.)

do you remember how
you pushed me into the water
and made me laugh
harder than i ever had
and shrieked like a girl
when i splashed you
and glittered like
a thousand lights
when you stood...

Sometimes I dream
Of flying
Like a bird
Or an aeroplane
Soaring above the mass of metal
I call home
Far away from
Everything else.

Sometimes I dream
Of crying
So much that it
Floods the room
Trickles out the door
Like a small stream
And I float away
In my tears
Wondering who
I’m meant to be.

Sometimes I dream
Of dreaming
It’s confusing
But I’m lying in bed
Dreaming of something
I’m dying to see
I never do.

Branches,
intertwining like woody serpents,
slithering across the blue expanse of the sky
and the endless seas of concrete;

Birds,
flitting between the branches,
through the heavy clouds,
through the smoke wafting from
the endless seas of cars;

Squirrels,
bushy tails alert, but too big for
the tightly wound mass of branches,
or the narrow pipes and drains,
now crying seas of muddy rainwater;

People,
thinking they are at the centre of creation,
stand ignorantly in their gardens of...

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?

I hate Queen. Or maybe I don't;
what I do hate
is these whitewashed walls,
their blank faces laughing at my plight;
the quiet, menacing whirring of the air con,
or the tightness of the straps around my wrists;

I do hate the ghosts, who haunt
these icy, ominous corridors--
dressed in white to match their cardboard smiles,
sticking needles into your skin and as you scream,
you know they are...
