FREE WRITING

Words flood into my mind. Words that leave echoes of memories behind three simple words. Three simple words that changed so much.
I had woken up in the middle of the night. Something dragged me from my slumber that would haunt my nightmares. Devil-like glowing red letters yelled 3:43 AM. My eyes screamed at me to go back to sleep but my ears held onto faint whispers on the other side of the wall.
    Slowly, the mumbles turned into...

You have shortened your life in so many ways,
and yet, you’ve lengthened it in so many more.

He left behind many things:
a teddy bear for his daughter,

Now, the bear lay forgotten in the bottom of a chest,
its eyes scratched and dusty
and its fur worn away from nights spent fighting away nightmares.

Slowly, the mumbles turned into words that would always be caught in the back of my head like a mouse in a trap.
“I can’t do this anymore, Kathy,” my father’s deep voice said, cracking, choking on his sobs. “I can’t do it.”
“What are you going to do? Leave?” My mother’s voice answered. Despite the evident despair in her voice, she still held up a challenge.
The pause that followed seemed louder than when they were yelling. I wrapped my hands tightly around my...

You curse the traffic around an accident,
but leaving five minutes earlier

You will never know every time this has happened,

You say that the world is fifty percent terrible,
but it is also fifty percent wonderful.
For every stone thrown at a bird,
there is a bird finding food for its chicks.
For every stranger to knock you down,
there is one to lift you back up.
Do not keep this from your children.
This place is already beautiful:
you only need the power to see it.

One year ago, he stepped from his front door for the last time.
He left behind many things:

Shoved to the back of her desk drawer,
the ink on the paper is faded
until his already chaotic handwriting is nearly illegible.
Pieces of glass are swept into the trashcan
from when the figure fell to the floor
as the black car of grief rolled into her driveway.
His father stares at a picture of his uniformed son,
desperately trying to recall just one memory.
But he can barely conjure more than a terrified smile looking back at him.
He left behind many things.

A Breathtaking Performance

I am a star. My performance moves people to tears as they watch emotion unfold on the stage. My voice fills the room with happiness and heartache as my character transforms throughout the play. The spotlight shines solely on me as people leap to their feet in a standing ovation. I bow. My smile lighting up the room following my breathtaking performance. I am…
“Turn in your papers at my desk.”
My head snaps up as reality comes flooding back in. Without even looking through my folder I know it wasn’t there. I can visualize it lying on my cluttered desk, forgotten.
Raising my hand, I casually ask, “How many points is this worth?”
Mrs. Weber skeptically quirks an eyebrow and says, “50 points.”
Beads of sweat form on my forehead as my stomach lurches up to my throat. I slowly stand up and walk toward her desk without...

Beneath the Floor

Beneath the floor,
Beneath the rugs,
Beneath the crying,
Beneath the yelling,
Beneath the leaving,
Beneath the heartbreak,
Beneath the memories,
Beneath me.

A trapdoor.
A room.
A shadow.
A secret.
A switch.
A flicker.
A flare.
A light.

Beneath the floor.
