FREE WRITING

i can't think of the right word
i suppose i will be able to one day
maybe i'll break my own heart or sit out in the rain until the cold infects my bones
or i'll spill hot chocolate on my dressing gown or chose an embarrassing profile picture

and i'll write down a spiteful sentence
then hold it up to a mirror
and record the exact opposite of those words
that's what i think of you

things that i did when you left

FREE WRITING

i. paced around my bedroom
everything felt so empty; so unloved.
the air was stale and i noticed dust on my red candle that is yet to be lit.
i tried burying my face in my pillow, searching for your scent but it was gone.
leafed though my notebook and read the frantic scribbles of the night before-
you were sound asleep downstairs. it was 1am. i was cautiously wading through the dark towards my desk
i bumped my leg...

inquisitive

FREE WRITING

you ask me questions that no one has ever thought of
and watch me answer in silence
you nod your head as i talk
and when i finish answering
your mouth forms a secret smile
meant just for us

you ask me questions that no one has ever thought of
as though our lives depend on the answers

the man

FREE WRITING

there is a man sitting in the park
there is a bench between us
and a few decades too

his hair is white and wispy
balding ferociously at the top

he doesn't wear glasses
i imagine that he forgets them
or despises them
or doesn't believe in state healthcare

he's wearing dark colours
i wouldn't have noticed if i hadn't looked
it feels like an invasion of privacy,
noting his clothing

a black fleece, although it is a summers day ...

FREE WRITING

you'll leave home one day
as everybody does

and your chest will ache and your arms will feel empty
even though your fingers feel cramped from carrying cardboard boxes

you'll wash your face with cold water, your breaths shuddering slowly
like a car engine waking
you remember how you washed your face back home
after arguments with your father
and how your mother would tell stories of the first english book she read;
"ram singh's car started slowly, slowly and...

oh, this is what it's all about?

FREE WRITING

being an adult is like needing to get something done
and hating the hold music

my eyes scrutinise government websites
and student finance tips and youtube uni room tours

i am already tired of being an adult
and i am not yet 18

i want to burn these office clothes
these wide legged trousers and new blazer
i want to tear this school tie
and planner full of rules that mean nothing but
control

i want control
over my own...
