you don't suppose it is a sign? the dragonfly wings slip so perfect under your fingernails, all glimmer and metaphors.
we shake it off. a second skin slipping past

shoulder blades and onto the top bunk. they don't call it a retreat for nothing. come, please,
you need this just as much as i do. steal away to the cabin's linoleum bathroom,
perched on top of the fridge

or ankles against the toilet seat. clumsy slamming of screen-door bodies against ...

the voice is dissonant. it unsettles my memories, flips through them like an art journal,
tells me to pick dead wildflowers and tells me to eat them.
tells me it should be possible to survive on nostalgia and roly-polies alone.
wants me to memorize the sweet smell of early morning death.
it is contemplating telling me to die here.
maybe. it might do. it is not sure yet. either way,
i am not going nowhere, and it knows that.

more sad prose written five minutes after i was supposed to be in bed

FREE WRITING

my earbuds are broken on one side; the left one is still playing king princess though.
lipstick stains on my pillow, tongue running against smooth collarbone. finger-scooping the dirt in my lawn to make graves for us.
does that make me desperate? the soil soaks up top-shelf whisky so well.
i kinda want to burn all the red dresses i bought for you to see me in. but i kinda want to keep them as well- isn’t that ironic?
suppose we...

i wanna to worship you like the art students do (down at your feet)

midsummer noon, pour me another cup of chai. deer flies lazy circling your cupid's bow,
getting stuck in all that lip gloss.
i know you are used to the attention, hometown hero/ prom queen.
hold still for me darling,
okay? i am trying to paint you seared into my retinas.
gouache does no justice to your beauty; I know, I'm trying my best.
turn your head to the charred sun for me- right there. see how it sits plump and drowsy,...

summer disease

FREE WRITING

cicada blood sticky under your sock feet, the crunch of gum between boulders. rubbing alcohol
dripping onto curled tongues and outstretched hands,
the decontamination of rebels from religion/ of tape from eyelids/
prayer/ this adhesive. steadfast summer on cracked skin, sand into open wounds.
there are no hospitals for the dead here. only mosquitoes.

prose on country clubs

FREE WRITING

socks sticky on sunburnt asphalt, a million miles away from home. but doesn’t it feel like home here too,
spray tans and brunch mimosas? fresh tennis skirts and floral swimsuits.
country club is a different name for heaven.
fits strange in my mouth, tastes like copper and charity. an ugly combination.
