race towards it
drawing out a metal tin

A coarse flour sack
Nǎinai, grandmother
sticks her hand inside
feeling, hoping for something to eat
she takes out the last handful of rice
shoves it in her mouth to chew
and
for a moment she remembers what
it feels like to be full

I open up the metal box and
a grin lights up my face
a Zongzi...

maybe i am an
old friend, knobs marred and speakers coated with a light
dust of flour. maybe i hold secrets that you
think you have forgotten-
summer cicadas, the salty twang of late july in the
air. blue-and-gold uniforms and the taste of blood and sweat on his
upper lip.
maybe i know more than you think.
maybe i remember the calico gown, the bouquet of
sunflowers,
The spins and dips and stolen kisses you think i
missed
And...

for science, I say.
Mermaids blush bioluminescence. I kidnap your
Clown-fish friend in hopes that I will
see your exoskeleton and
watch coral glow in your pompadour
I tie his fins with seaweed; oceanography is not a forgiving
sport. don’t act surprised when
I tell you
Scientists are really just politicians masquerading as dung
beetles. when your clownfish friend dies from nuclear complications,
I give him a toilet-bowl funeral as per your
request- but only because I want to see...

I.
Ghosts are
supposed to be scary.
they are supposed to send
chills
through your body- but that’s not
how you see the it.
II.
maybe you should
explain
yourself.
the stories say you didn’t
look back
when you boarded the flight
but then again-
fortune tellers are not to be trusted.
III.

let us ignore the elephant in the

pretend to be deaf against the staccato drumming of machines- dry-heave through your

against your hips.
