Hi there! My name is Sam. I'm 17 years old and I enjoy writing poetry, personal essays, critical essays, and journalism. I'm interested in nature and history, and you'll find a lot of my writing to center around those topics.

Look at What we Made

FREE WRITING

"Look at what we made," said Nivelle, running his hand across Ferria's thin shoulders. "Look at..." His voice trailed off into a sigh as he watched the two children chase each other through the meadow. He tried to imagine the worlds they had created, who they pretended to be, why they ran after one another. He smiled as he noticed how they laughed, no serious obligations to bind them to stern jaws and frowns. He held his wife just a...

Oh Well, Not Every Party Will be a Blast

FREE WRITING

Well, I wanted to have the evening be fun.
But I got there thirty minutes early,
and I did not know this at the time, that I was, in fact,
thirty minutes early.
I finished listening to a piece from the soundtrack of Solo: A Star Wars Story,
wondering why no one else was arriving,
and then confidently pounded my fist onto the wooden door,
and then did so again, because no one answered,
and then his mother answered the...

Unfortunate

FREE WRITING

I want to be in a story, to be a dashing, romantic hero!
One who can fight monsters, and charm others,
and escape the most dangerous of situations at the last second,
and say something witty while I wipe my brow,
and then share a kiss with my sidekick, who has played a key role
in helping me complete the quest,
and then live happily ever after,
and...

This Poem is About Graduation, but it Looks More Like I Spilled Language, but Who Knows? Perhaps it's a Metaphor for Fear of What's to Come

FREE WRITING

On Thursday came the time to say
goodbye to those with me
in journalism class after
a four-year, emotion-ridden sea.

On Friday, then, quite quickly,
we graduated, you see,
and then we threw into the air
our caps. 'It's done' we all agree.

That day too we said goodbye,
and interestingly
though two goodbyes will often do,
the word won't avoid he nor she.

I looked forward to my farewells
somewhat ironically
because I find them tedious, and sad, and...

Never Getting Back

FREE WRITING

I'm never getting back
my first journalism story
the joy and pride, and accomplishment
I'll remember until I'm forty.

I'm never getting back
all those trips that we would take
Cramped in big cars, cozy beneath
the sky, its thunderous shake.

I'm never getting back
the smiles that I shared
of friends I made, and loved and held
and always truly cared.

I'm never getting back
the night when Dreams were shown
as to Rumours we listened
driving down SoCo.

A Limerick, Just For Fun

PROMPT: The Limerick

I thought it was only a dream
when I ate a tub of ice cream.
But when I woke up,
and saw an empty cup,
to stand it took the work of a team.
