FREE WRITING

At 6 o’clock, 
we turn up, 
at a strangers house
far away from town.
 
Travel weary,
stomachs grumbling,
eyelids sagging.

‘Bonjour,’
our host smiles,
and shoots more French at our ears.

Our noses scrunch.
What did he say?

Mum asks him,
‘Parlez vous anglais?”

His head shakes, 
NO!

We look at him, 
and he at us,
wondering, 
how will this work?

Inside, 
we hope to lie down,
and relax,
but he shows us a couch,
and sits down to...

PROMPT: Five Line Fiction

When I started school they told me I had to stay away from the little girls in the corner with the tatty clothes and the sad eyes.
"They are not like you," my teachers said. 
I stayed away, giggling with the little girls with the pink ribbons and the neat braids. 
Then Mama and Papa went to live in heaven and I went to live in the orphanage.
The little girls in the corner became my friends and I became one...
