I do not feel regret, having happily consumed extremely impressive cornucopias, calculating international ridiculousness. Americanisation professionalises misrepresentation, characteristically self-congratulatory straightforwardness. Buckminsterfullerene.

The Unfortunate

PROMPT: Week 7 - Larding  | GROUP: Elements of Craft

In the majority of cases, conscience is an elastic and very flexible article, which will bear a deal of stretching and adapt itself to a great variety of circumstances. [As chance would have it, James Wherington’s conscience was ever-so flexible conscience, and was capable of repressing even the slivers of goodness that shown through his soul.] Some people by prudent management and leaving it off piece by piece, like a flannel waistcoat in warm weather, even contrive, in time, to...

Blood Charred by the Sun

PROMPT: Week 7 - Larding  | GROUP: Elements of Craft

Because everyone knows yellow pain, pressed into American letters, turns to gold.

I dig my pen into the page and carve out scars. Shining ink stains the paper with blackened blood. Charred black and fiery by the sun, burning with hunger.

Golden blood snatched up to be stolen, dripping through white fingers as it turns to sand.

Ground-up pebbles spill onto the ground streaked with gunpowder. Trickling from the hourglass until nothing is left.

One day we will bleed for...

Her feet tap on the floor.
The dough slaps on the wood.
His hands clap in sync.
The sounds of the world join,
As we make our own chords,
In our own ways,
Yet we all join,
The band of life.

PROMPT: Week 7 - Larding  | GROUP: Elements of Craft

Annabeth glared at me like she was going to punch me, and then she did something that surprised me even more. It was more surprising than exploding the toilets during my first week at camp, more surprising than seeing Grover in a wedding dress next to a cyclops, more surprising than almost losing Annabeth to the Hunters, more surprising than learning Nico was conducting summoning rituals with McDonalds, and yes, even more surprising than learning I was a demigod in...

PROMPT: Week 7 - Larding  | GROUP: Elements of Craft

Perry gripped the edge of the washbasin and hauled himself to a standing position. A single rose fell from his limp grip into the sink. His knees trembled, as did his lower lip. A scar covered one side of his face. His feet curled into the hard tiled floor. His socks, gifted by his mother and patterned blue and green, were slowly turning brown. His shoes, taken off in a fit of madness, lay discarded on the floor. Shuddering breathes...

Origami Heart

PROMPT: Week 3 - The Symbol  | GROUP: Elements of Craft

She went everywhere with a pale pink origami swallow pinned neatly over her heart. In the summer it sang, and in the winter it curled and nested, but all through the year it pulsed a steady rhythm through her chest; its wings flapped sweet, sticky pink blood through her veins.

It had been 792 days since she’d started making the swallow, since she’d burnt up all her newspapers with their tiny black print that marched like little soldiers across cream...
