Keep the Ball Rolling
Writing with concision.
In his craft book On Writing, author Stephen King writes: “In many cases when a reader puts a story aside because it ‘got boring,’ the boredom arose because the writer grew enchanted with his powers of description and lost sight of his priority, which is to keep the ball rolling.”
King, who has sold more than 350 million books, knows a thing or two about keeping the ball rolling… not to mention keeping the reader reading!
So let’s take his advice. Your task, dear writer, is to create a scene that is clear, concise and driven by action. Do away with elaborate description, adjectives, and adverbs. Strive for concision and momentum. We can’t wait to come along for the ride.
