The Trial

December 30, 2019

Phantom hands clench my throat,

I cannot speak; my mind is broke,

The teacher waits, patiently,

And despite my glasses, I cannot see.

"Saul, won't you come and present?"

She asks again, to my deep lament,

There's no escape, so I stand tall,

And walk to the board with a measured crawl.

I have no plan, I must confess,

But Saul the Mighty will give it his best.

I improvise and tell white lies,

My confidence a great disguise,

The teacher claps, I think, impressed,

And I return, spent, to my desk,

For a much-needed afternoon rest,

But at the end of class I reel, distressed,

At "Tomorrow, class, we have a test."
