This one is SLIGHTLY longer than usual but OH WELL

January 5, 2019

There was once a young girl
Who dreamed she could dance
She’d watch people and videos
Soaking it all up in a trance

But whenever she tried to move
Her feet would turn out awkward
Clumsy, as all the ideas she had
Evaporated and flew upwards

So she let it drop for a few years
The only dancing that took place
Was in her mind and daydreams
But the longing still shone on her face

Parties from popular girls avoided
Petrified before that pulsing dancefloor
All those bodies flowing naturally
Nothing could stop her heading for the door

The songs cried out to bring her back
She turned a deaf ear to their pleas
But as the left that joyful party
She’d still hear them in the breeze

little girl, little girl
 come and try again
you’ve got what it takes
there won’t be awkwardness
 or pain

Fear of humiliation killed the hope
That those words would bring to her
She scrunched those dreams into a ball
And time passed with a blur

The young girl eventually grew up
And finally at fifteen years of age
She heard the songs’ pleas once more
And her heart woke and fluttered in its cage

little girl, little girl

They said

your music still awaits
     old of body
  but young of heart
trust that it’s never too late to start

The not-so-young girl opens her ears
And she spies all those lost years
With one foot in front of the other
She starts to learn, unwind her fears

Along with hope the liveliness came back
As she created figures on the fly
She’d no longer linger during parties
She could walk to that dancefloor, head held high

When walking past a shop
Or when a car with windows down
blared out a quick-beat song
That’s when she’d dance around town

It took her a while, that she’ll admit
To find the passion from long ago
But now she danced to her heart’s content
And the music would proudly crow

  little girl, little girl
look at how you move!
your feet are flitting
   left to right
how could someone disapprove?

no awkwardness
no humiliation
no pain and no frustration

to go after what you want
   that’s the greatest lesson

time for me to help another
  the world is vast
  and it calls loud

but you’ll be called Fleetfoot
    to dance fast and proud
the world is finally yours
so don’t fear it no more
I like shuffle dancing. More specifically, the cutting shapes shuffle. There's this youtube channel called ELEMENTS that does tutorial videos and they're very good. Just in case you wanted to learn to shuffle. It's fun.

@nevaredhp Randomly dancing around school to embarrass your friends is AMAZING

@Quille Oh I get that sudden uncomfortableness when dancing :] I just try to practice as much as possible because I realised the better I could move the more confident I got

    @Johanna Thank youuuu!

Also I didn't expect to come across that many dancers, whether for fun or taking lessons :P

This is so relatable and I love the voice you used to convey all the emotions :D I just dance when I feel like it, but I do get embarrassed when I find out someone's watching me :) Trying to overcome that :D
I really do love this poem also; the combination of the italics in with the rest is very well done :D

wow, this reminds me of the days when I took dance classes. Now I don't do anything except randomly dance around at school and embarrass my friends :) good poem. I like the alternating between her internal voice and the narrator.
