Australia

In this country the animals
have the faces of
animals.

Their eyes
flash once in car headlights
and are gone.

Their deaths are not elegant.

They have the faces of
no-one.

oh my god
do you hear
our screams?

children,
innocence sold
for a second
of screaming
& a fit
of bodies rough
& raw & hideous
& you do nothing
as they are
carved & cut
like beasts
cloven-hoofed
beasts you
consumed
sodom you burned
but not this
not this oh my god
not this.
you made angels
& men
& animals
but look at
what you gave them:
knives & guns
& your first name
whispered as the
atomic bombs go
off.
i’m a little afraid
that you fucked
up, god.
that you made a human
mistake in the same
shape as you. did you,
did you,
intend for the school shootings
& drug addictions & beatings
beating bruises or the chapped
lips of girlfriends cradling broken
boyfriends back from war did you did you
think of all the problems
you have shaped
oh my god,
what the fuck
are you doing as the
people starved in fields
of dust did they break another
law or just swallow all their sins on
a crucifix too fast?
not a prescription for the
divine pill that you
fill inside me i still
have faith you’ve
fucked everything
oh my god have you
heard about the people
persecuted based on race
based on the face based on
those they love; hearts set
a-racing as you pace in & out
of the world oh my god
did you not think about all
the fucked up shit you sent us.
lucifer,
lucifer,
shining & proud lucifer,
defiler, whisperer,
oh my god you gave
him as a gift.
to us, to us,
another angel not
parcelled in lead
pipes choking old
women in nursing homes
or machine gun hallucinations
flickering in murdering eyes
but a tempter, temptress,
body shifting, a temple.
oh my god, you love that
the transgender is stoned
in the citadel of your worship?
love & loved, you
hate & hated us all
& the sun & the dawn,
the thing you made.
oh my god,
i understand the resentment.
because it’s always my fault,
as you watch on.
we are beings,
made in your image.
if we have sinned,
so have you,
oh my god.

This poem is incredible- honestly I can’t even express how much I love it, although the topic may be controversial, I agree with what you are conveying and I could never have said it any better. Your pure emotion showed through and it really moved me as a reader. Again, amazing job!!

I don't even know if this is about disliking God or being religious at all (Which I am not). I just believe this is beautiful, raw emotion. Fantastic job.

@Paperbird That’s exactly what this poem is about

I'm not religious, but I think this poem is beautiful regardless of belief. It's more a poem about the frightening things in the world than it is about disliking God.

The world is really messed up right now. But God didn't intend for sin to come into it. He created it perfect.1 Corinthians 15: 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
God does love us, and He has not sinned. When you feel discouraged, you can remember that there is a New Earth waiting for us at the end of the road, where we will feel no pain and no sorrow. We can pray that God will help us, and He does answer some prayers. He hears them all. And He loves everyone, too. God is in control. Until then, we spread the Gospel and ask God to help us in our endeavors to make the world better, and we ask God to give us mercy for the days to come.

I'm so sorry that you feel this way. I wish God and I could fix the world together, but that's a bit of a tall order for me. :) I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. God likes to work with people, and often, He won't work without them. I guess it's because He likes doing stuff with us. Take the story of Gideon, for example. God could have rained fire on the Mideonites like He did to Sodom and Gomorrah, but instead He put up with Gideon constantly pestering him for signs, the man's fears and crummy self-image. Why? Because He had made Gideon for that purpose, and He loved that man. The same goes for Christians today. It's just that some Christians don't want to embrace what they were born to do, and that is fix the world. But some do, and you'd better watch them, because they will do it, one patch of world at a time. And that's what I was born for, and that's what I want to do.
