A (Potentially) Bad Idea

Okay, so I had an idea. It may be a good one, it may be a... not good one. I wanted to write a story mainly told through poetry, but I also wanted to maybe add some paragraphs here and there. I feel like some things are explained easier through plain words, though maybe that's just me being lazy ;) If it works out well, I'd actually like to continue this story.
What works? What doesn't work? Should I reconsider my hopes and dreams? Please feel free to comment and critique!

I sit in the small safe house, my few belongings scattered around me. I’ve done it. I escaped from the base.
I wonder if it was worth it.
The sickly, grimy lights above flicker, but I can still see the picture I hold. Every inch of it. I could never forget it. It’s a picture of her.

Astara Raynor
A rose of a girl
Though her spine stands straight
Her soul’s edges curl.
The weight of empires on her shoulder
And hearts in her hands
For is she a scourge
Or a defender of lands?
There were days I’d get lost
In the gold of her eyes
Marvel at her bravery
And refusal of lies
Now whispers on the wind
Those days gone forever
From the promises broken
And the relationships severed.

I bury my head in my arms, willing the tears away. I made my choice. So did she.

I suppose only time will tell who made the right one.

In case it was unclear (because it probably was) the narrator is not the above-mentioned Astara, but the girl in the picture. This is all very vague and confusing, much like myself. *awkward thumbs up*

Thank you! :D And I need to fix the footnotes at some point- the Astara character IS the girl in the picture, it's just worded wrong in the footnotes. If you were wondering, the narrator's name is Leda. Sorry for the confusion! ;)
