Message from Writer

“I only know that learning to believe in the power of my own words has been the most freeing experience of my life. It has brought me the most light. And isn't that what a poem is? A lantern glowing in the dark.”

Sounds Assail Me

September 30, 2018

As the lights go out
one

        one
In our house in the
ever quiet
suburbia, I tip-toe through the hall
timing my breaths with my steps

I consider how the erratic rhythm of his
drowsy inhalations
may mirror his tendency to
    -without warning-
turn to unjustifiable anger

I hear laughter, but I do not have to wonder where it came from
It must come from the tv set, the
only place where people can always be happy

In the daylight, I wish for anything but quiet-
I hope someone will greet me in the hallway
and I wish to practice for hours on end.

But as the night falls, even the sound of my heartbeat
makes my heart beat faster
lest I awaken the beast.
