The Colours of Our World

September 18, 2018

Our world was filled with colours
The bright blues of jays or the fiery red of cardinals
The swaying birds in the tropical forests
The simple sparrows and pigeons you see every day

Our world was filled with colours
The light blue sky and the fluffy white clouds
The deep blue and the fish swimming under it
The snow white polar bears and penguins

Our world was filled with colours
The leopard print that made a fashion statement
The snake skin and leather used for posh bags
The white ivory tusks of the elephants

Our world is filled with colours
Everywhere there was a bright flash of beauty
There were birds singing happily and animals dancing to the music
But it isn’t the same any more. None of this is.

Where have the colours disappeared to?
Or are they camouflaging themselves scared of us?
Because we killed their kind for our selfish needs,
And they are dying innocently for something we did

We destroy their home to have a better one for ourselves
We throw our garbage into seas not thinking about the damage caused
We are killing them because we want a life filled with luxuries
We are ruining their colours, turning our world black and white

Gosh, this is so beautiful and even heartbreaking. Your figurative language was wonderful and the idea was really well put together. I liked the repetition of, "our world was/is filled with colors". That really set the tone/message of the piece clearly into the reader's mind. The last sentence was so poetic, "turning our world black and white" after referencing the beautiful colors our world once was.
Great job and keep writing! This was amazing:)

I'm very environmentally minded, especially given that I live right on the Jersey Shore and have to see in person the kind of damage people have done to the ocean. I love to write poetry to get this message across and find yours enchanting!

Your imagery is great and the way you use it is so well timed.
