Magic Tree of Wonders

September 17, 2018

So duly kighted
The Magic Tree of Wonders
Gave fantasies fruit

To wonder and light
Our adventures did bestow
Us wreathed in veined leaves

For back then the tree
Was a whole and green part of
The world we lived in

Only the bravest
Climbed highest to what only
Is seen from the top

Stoic through all time
The Magic Tree of Wonders
Fire-red in fall sun

When strong branches held
Our clambering feet quite safe
As we climbed along

For back then the tree
Was the bright better part of
The world we lived in

When the shadows came
And the growing dump's smell did
Not quite reach the top

Magic Tree of Wonders
Holding lost knowledge

Secrets of fairies
Were buried within knot-holes
Waiting to be found

The possibility
Was endless through the gaps that
Showed us horizon

For back then the tree
But a window we saw of
The world we lived in

Where repurcussions
Of fading ozone layers
Could not breach the top

Further and further
The Magic Tree of Wonders
Did grow as we grew

Those simple days gone
Now splintered by plastic screens
Stuck in glass boxes

Bird feeders now rust
Amidst many pale, fading leaves
Soon turning to dust

For back then the tree
Was a distant old part of
The world we lived in

The lights from our lives
Made it hard to see beauty
And stars from the top

Silently sideways
The Magic Tree of Wonders
We weren't around to hear

When it fell like snow
We looked and saw it lying
The corrupted trunk

Covered in lichen we drug
The brittle branches

Only then could we
Understand our fragile world
Was never perfect

But trees fall the way
They lean, and the lense of life
Is best in tree tops
