we make robots and name them
discovery and imagination we send them into the sky
and sing happy birthday to them,
solely because we don't want them
to feel alone.
my friend always buys the most
battered boxes of pasta
because she worries
that no one else will.
we see a squirrel in
the road ahead
and risk car crashes
to keep them
from getting hurt.
my cousin tucks in all of her toys
even though she knows they're not alive
simply so that they'll be comfortable.
we lie on uncomfortable ground
for hours sometimes
to see the stars that are there every night
because we spend our lives
searching for beauty.
one day we might be gone
and discovery and imagination will be the only remnants of us left
and maybe someone will find them
and they will ask who used to be
and our creations will say
we do not know, but they named us
discovery and imagination
and sang us happy birthday
and told us to tell you hello.
