PROMPT: Where I'm From

I am from the Town of Glass
Light, Beautiful
The sun dances on the sidewalk under running children's feet,
The birds twitter in the trees and carefully watch for small treats,
There's a solid warmth that has settled, for now,
And it is calm,
A picture of peace.

I am from the Town of Glass
Sharp, Precise
Every edge has been cut for a purpose,
Every angle predetermined,
Every person made to be perfect,
Like sculptures
Lining the streets.

I am from the Town of Glass
And the light is refracted and reflected until there are a dozen different perspectives of one object,
Each so vastly different that no one can tell that everyone is looking at the same thing.

This town is a paradox
An endless back-and-forth
It is both a prison and a palace,
A place of boredom and entertainment,
A place of sweetness that can make you smile
And a place of sharp edges of expectation that cause children to weep.

This Town of Glass
Is beautifully terrifying.
Like sugar-coated shards,
It is sweet and sparkling,
But can cut quick and deep
Right to the bone.

As it grows
I can only hope
That time will fade the edges that drive people away,
And leave behind the glittering lights that make this place worth loving.

This scared me if I'm being honest, but the good scared.
