Message to Readers

This narrator holds onto things that just aren't important any more. Or perhaps their friend is too quick to move on. Which of these seems more prevalent in this piece?

My friend Rebecca twists a black bobby pin out of shape, so the metal is bent into a 'W' shape.  
"Here," she says, placing it in my hand with a smile, "I got you a present." 
We both laugh, before leaving the school building together. I tuck the pin into my blazer pocket, treasuring it. It stays there for three years. 
I'm cleaning when I see it again. Some of the coating is gone, but it is still recognisable. Sentimental, I unlock my phone and send Rebecca a picture of it. My phone chimes with her response. 
"What's that?"
