Message to Readers

I had so much fun doing this! I love writing poetry, although I often
don't get what's on my mind out onto paper in the form of a poem.
This contest was good practice, and reminded me that I have to write
poetry more. Please tell me what you think! Also-- this poem is based
on a time I went paddle boarding, and saw dolphins. Thanks for reading! :)

Morning Paddle

August 18, 2015

We paddled this morning
my dad and me
after breakfast we went up
to the beach around the corner
exactly 82 steps from our house
the paddle boards were already leaning
against the wooden-wire fence

so we grabbed them
and paddled right out
the water was flat and cool and inviting
especially against the rising August sun

the sky looks particurlarly wide and blue
when you are paddling
and the ocean that seems never-ending
makes you feel
like a grain of sand or
the seagull that is flying by
the only one besides us
here to witness the morning

we only went a few blocks
and we had just turned around when
my dad spotted the splashes
evidence of fish jumping

I got a funny feeling in my chest
that made look back
at the ocean behind me
and that's when I saw
the gray, elegant fin of a dolphin
slice the water
