I would say the importance placed on English and the stereotype of those who aren't able to speak it.
The balance between other people and the self-reflection really takes this piece to the next level.
The first line, for sure- it makes an impact. And the highlighted line- that question really drives your point home. However I think this line, "And still, when my accent persisted people laughed" can be strengthened- I feel like what you want to say here is important.
I would say that a lot of this is reflection, but the balance between event and thought is good- it has a feeling of waiting change.
I'm left with a motivation to change the fact that English is held as the highest standard.
