The Window

November 16, 2021

PROMPT: Reclaiming

They'd thought it was useless,
The window in the attic.
Its ancient wooden frame was cracked,
Its thin glass old and delicate.
So they took it out,
Out into the forest,
And dumped it among the trees.

At first, the trees frowned,
And the animals shied away.
This, this unnatural intruder had come,
Disturbing their quiet peace.
How long would it stay?

Slowly, the plants forgot their anger,
The animals' curiosity got the better of them.
They sheltered the window, nibbled its splintered frame.
They were okay with it now.
The window was welcome to stay.

Fall sang, Winter roared.
But finally Spring got her way.
Ivy hugged the frame and a Lily bloomed
Through a hole Winter's storm had made.

Mice ate away at the wood.
A Spider stretched her web across the frame.
Hailstones punched through the glass,
But still the window stayed.
It was home now.
It wasn't going anywhere.

Years passed.
The wood rotted, the glass shattered.
Flowers grew among a garden of crystal
And grubs smiled in their home.
The window smiled, it was happy here
As it slowly melted into the Earth
Until you'd hardly know it was there.

But, if you headed to that place
Where the Trees stand guard and the Rabbits play games
And you searched among the Lilies.
You would find
Sparkling shards of sun-kissed diamonds.
It is the final gift of the window.
This is a fiction poem, but it could happen. Enjoy.
