PROMPT: July Grab Bag

  • a story that centers on a flame going out. (Elodie Hart)

her mother had always told her that, one day, she would hold the world in her hands

but all the little girl wanted was to hold a pen.

her father would often say 'a penny for your thoughts?'

but her thoughts were worth so much more.

the words and phrases and metaphors pulsed within her, a flickering fire of a hundred thousand silent voices in her head.

the commas and hyphens and colons burned brightly in her soul, warm coals blinking crayola red orange.

her sister tried in vain to teach her how to cook

but she was meant to flip pages, not pancakes.

the little girl grew
and so did the flames
they roared and when she put pencil to paper
it was magic the way she painted pictures without so much as a brush

but her world didn't see it that way.

she gave every spark
to a story she wanted to share

but the fire didn't die until they put it out.

they held her world
her purpose
in their hands
and squeezed

a fire without oxygen is just ash
and when they threw those words & phrases & metaphors & commas & hyphens & colons

so was she.
