Sun Sets on Summer

A sunset dabbed out by smoke on a
canvas, commonly too hazy for my liking.
But not tonight.
Tonight the break of fall can be tasted.
Crews of crickets croak some of their last
summer love songs before the turning of 
the leaves,
and a sentimentality arises in my face:
the remembrance of the summer sun,
scribbling my childhood cheeks a rosy
"The sun is a poet too," I whisper softly
to my dog as she points her face to the
"How could it not be?"
