The Color of Numbers

March 23, 2021

Nine is orange
Not like cheese, more like the sunset
Eight is brown
Sweet as chocolate, rough as oak trees
Seven is indigo
The sky after sundown, the feathers of a bird whose shade is only an illusion
Six is light blue
A robin's egg, a wake-up call from a sky that's ready for the day
Five is green
Sour like limes, alive like new leaves
Four is purple
Darker than lilacs, lighter than eggplant
Three is red
A blush, a stop sign
Two is yellow
Sunflowers, sunshine laughs
One is white
A new beginning, a blank page
Zero has no color--there's nothing to see.
A poem about the color of an idea (it's more the color of ten ideas, but I think it still counts). The line for seven is referencing the indigo bunting, which I recently learned has no actual blue pigment in its feathers--it only appears blue because of the way the feathers refract sunlight.

Great poem! I especially love eight, the contrast between chocolate and tree bark is genius!
