Four guests stayed at my house that night.

Uninvited, unexpected, self-appointed guests.

Quite a visit it was, but soon the guests took flight.

The first came in the morning, the sun was shining bright

She was delicate as a rose, but left, despite my requests.

Four guests stayed at my house that night.

The second came during lunch, so I hesitantly rose to invite--

Without heeding the door, a man strode in, brusque but full of jest.

Quite a visit it was, but soon the guests took flight.

The third one came through the back door

A sweet old sage, the woman was, frail but meek and blest.

Four guests stayed at my house that night.

The fourth came just before I had gone to rest, waiting near in sight

His breath was cold, his eyes were cruel, his stay longer than the rest.

Quite a visit it was, but soon the guests took flight.

But before leaving, he showed me to my bed, and I slipped from light

Into that eternal rest after the long day’s quest

Four guests stayed at my house one night.

Quite a visit it was, but soon the guests took flight.
