i am born a roof,

& i make a masquerade of it.

year 3:
my cousin & i slinking in like

year 4:
war cries, we fall sick on antiseptic,

year 5:
crunch upon the grander aspects of 

year 6:
our being. how the staircase 

year 7:
winds, how someone can nick their skull

year 8:
against it. i see outlines starked against

year 9:
the dirt of the wall. i am born a roof,

year 10:
& they do not know it. i am 

year 11:
plastered inside every wall of the house,

year 12: 
& they do not know it. the grocer measures 

year 13: 
for us all the time we waste. 

year 14:
i have stitched myself onto so many tongues--

year 15: 
at night, i slip under the covers (of),

year 16: 
& pretend to sleep.

    This is utterly striking my gosh. It's such a fresh, creative take on the prompt, and yet it still fits so well. Like, I found myself looking at the years each part corresponded to, and realized that it fit each year so well. For instance, year 14, like I get this sense that at age 14 is the time where you've met so many people, met people you can call friends and that is why you've stitched yourself onto so many tongues. It's just utterly brilliant and I love it, the way it fits so unexpectedly well, in such a moving and poetic way.
